Vancouver Fashion Week is fast approaching. And one Kiwi designer preparing to jet her way to Canada in early October is Zimbabwe-born, New Zealand-raised, Chido Dimairo who will be showing her S/S 2019 collection, ‘Wish You Were Here.’
Dimairo’s namesake label, CHIDO, brings together her cross-cultural identity which has resulted in a unique design aesthetic.
“CHIDO targets the woman who loves bold textiles and colour as much as she appreciates simple silhouettes,” says the designer.
Bold, detailed and colourful, CHIDO is ethically focused with an approach to producing affordable luxury. The label also embraces the beauty of individualism, and the young designer is excited about putting her collection in front of an audience that understands diversity.
“If anything, I feel even more confident keeping this ethos as part of my collection knowing how much this is celebrated by an international audience,” Dimairo says.
In ‘Wish You Were Here,’ Dimairo takes her colour palette from the beauty of Lake Kariba - the world’s largest man-made lake, which sits along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
This collection explores Dimairo’s fond and distant memories of spending summers by this lakeside.
Here, she introduces both bright and neutral tones that take the shape of easy-fitting silhouettes in comfortable linens and cotton - the perfect uniform for lounging around without a care in the world.
Airy knits also form building blocks for the perfect holiday wardrobe.
And the collection isn’t without some bolder pieces too - the voluminous Amelia Flared Top and Dress set out to make a statement.
Why show at Vancouver Fashion Week?
Dimairo was inspired to launch her collection at VFW because the platform supports both emerging and established designers. Other Kiwis have also started heading there too.
“I had previously seen other New Zealand brands showing there and the impact that it had for them, so when I was offered the opportunity I jumped at it immediately,” Dimairo says.
Vancouver Fashion Week is the fastest growing fashion week in the world and the only industry event that actively seeks out to showcase international award-winning designers from over 25 global fashion capitals.
Since its inception 18 years ago, VFW has operated with a firm belief in being a local initiative with global instincts.
“Fashion is a truly global phenomenon and its so inspiring to see such a strong mix of designers all under one roof here in Vancouver.” says Jamal Abdourahman, producer and founder of Vancouver Fashion Week.
