New Kid Calls For Submissions

NEW KID is a platform for cutting-edge emerging fashion talent and is now taking submissions from designers who have graduated within the past two years, and those in their final year of study. Based out of New Zealand this exciting platform features a directory of designers across Asia Pacific.

The platform is designed to boost the profile of emerging fashion designers and contemporary jewellers, with news, events and creative projects with the aim to create a dialogue about issues and views on the industry at large.

Creative Director, Sonia Sly, says the site is about having a space where emerging designers are front and centre, giving them the opportunity to create limited runs and sell via a curated online store - a feature that will be launched later this year.

Sonia Sly is a well respected New Zealand broadcaster, producer and fashion writer with more than a decades worth of cross-platform visual storytelling behind her. She is the presenter and producer for RNZ National’s foremost fashion podcast, My Heels Are Killing Me, and a 2 X winner of the New York Radio Awards.

“There is an incredible amount of emerging designer work that is lost once designers are left to fend for themselves with very little support to push their profiles,” she says.

The site aims to give designers the flexibility to continue with their creative endeavors and work for other designers, while also focusing on developing new ideas and limited edition pieces before committing to a path with a full-time brand, which comes with a multitude of demands.

“New Kid is about letting these amazing new designers work at their own pace and it’ll be our job to push their profiles when they’re dipping their toes into the water,” says Sly.

As a platform, New Kid is looking for conceptual work from designers who have a strong aesthetic. “The best work is experimental, innovative and thought-provoking. I think what is vital about these new voices is that they’re creating a statement about our times - especially where the future of fashion is heading,” she says.

New Kid is now taking designer submissions from recent graduates and students in their final year of study.  To submit, fill in a submission form OR email for more information. Submissions for this round close on 29 June 2018.
