DESIGNER/ ARTIST STATEMENT:
"As a child and teenager I was a committed dancer and later a performance artist - this is something which I credit as the birth of my interest in fashion. I remember discovering the beauty and creativity behind costume design and realising how important those garments were in relation to the performance; how these fabrics and textures contributed to the narrative and to the way the figures moved about the space.
"I found myself constantly trying costumes on and finding myself in the costume department dressing up in the scraps of found material. The majority of these pieces were ballet and contemporary dance costumes. I was extremely fond of how clothing and costume worked on the body and how they where used to tell a story. Being constantly surrounded and inspired by costumes inspired me to create my own, this became entangled in my everyday life as I would rarely leave the house without an element of theatrical embellishment." - Hugh William Stewart
